    particular magazine forms one into subjects is by appealing tempting men to look beyond the cover in order to find the more enticing display of female flesh; coupled with the  decidedly masculine approach with such additional categories as sports, automotive and business, Maxim appeals to a vast array of its male target audience by way of sexist attitudes.  The cultural values highlighted include individualism, capitalism, patriarchy and sexual freedom, with the latter being addressed in an educated and responsible fashion. The topic  of individualism leads some to take issue with the extent to which society has focused upon individual desires over and above that masses. To be unique within a world  of sameness is a quest sought by many people; however, it is by way of such an objective that one becomes labeled as selfish and intolerant of commonly accepted methods.  This negative connotation of individualism - which is to maintain an independence from the norm - has cast an even darker meaning upon striving to achieve ones own distinctiveness.  "This collapse into condemnation happens because the vocabulary of individualism sounds harsh to ears becoming accustomed to the competing moral attitudes found in such terms as co-operation, teamwork and,  especially, community, a term which seldom occurs without a great outpouring of incense" (Minogue PG). Among these cultural values that represent a devalued  approach, patriarchy stands out as one of the most explicit, with women serving as the focal point of virtually every issue. The image of power and gender roles in  popular culture reflects significant patriarchal control, with the manipulation of the female gender a pertinent component of its objective.
