OBJECTIVES  What started out as an effective employee benefit, that is, allowing employees to have a set number of sick leave days per year, has escalated into a widespread misuse of  the benefit. Looking upon these days as days that are entitled to them, far too many employees choose to use all of these days whether they are sick or  not. By pinpointing where the absences lie and getting to the root of the problem, companies are more likely to be able to implement a system that works right for  them, in order to take control of this costly and growing problem of unscheduled absences in the workplace. The right program will give those employees who truly need time  off for illness the benefit of doing so, while at the same time taking disciplinary action when the benefit is abused. METHODOLOGY There are several different approaches that can  be used to combat absenteeism in the workplace. One of these programs is known as the No-Fault Approach. This effective program gives an employee a pre-selected number of  unscheduled absences in any set span of time; for instance, one twelve month period. In this no-fault approach, unscheduled absences are considered any absence that is not pre-determined.  For instance, this does not include vacation time or holidays that would be pre-scheduled. The unscheduled time off may be used for anything such as sick leave or
