    the Audiencia of Lima" is a text which richly details the career of Baquijano during the reforms of the late 18th century in the Americas. The text is well researched  and referenced and provides a good inside look at the political developments in Peru at that time. Regardless of it detailed coverage of Baquijanos political career however, it does provide  the reader with only that and for those readers who would want a more broad approach to the culture and other elements within Peruvian life at that time, they would  have to look elsewhere. A visit to Lima in 1971 inspired Mark Burkholder to investigate the name "Baquijano" after he found several  references to it around the city. He also found that there was a session devoted to him at the Quinto Congreso Internacional de Historia de America in honor of Perus  sesquicentennial. Since that time Burkholder has discovered that Jose Baquijano y Carrillo is not recognized as one of Perus representatives of the Enlightenment during that time and is also known  as the "precursor of Independence" (Burkholder ix). Burkholder is the first to admit that his book is not to be considered a biography  but rather is focused more on his efforts during a time in Perus history when Americans sought high offices and the discrimination and frustration that was felt during that time.  Burkholder wrote the book after five trips to Spain and one trip to Peru and Chile. His research and references are extensive as he tried to best appreciate the atmosphere  of the time. It was during the ambitious time in 1812, that Jose Baquijano y Carrillo was selected as the third Conde de
