    paper is the reporting of a study that was undertaken in Homia, a rural area in Western Uganda between November 2000 and October 2001. The research had several aims, these  were to assess the causes of maternal mortality and the role of culture and social factors in maternal deaths in the area. The aim was to assess whether or  not there was a need for additional approaches to reduce the rates of maternal mortality. The research utilised a descriptive and  cross sectional design with both quantitative and qualitative data collected using surveys of 808 women with more than one child birth experience as well as 24 focus group with  a total of 240 participants and interviews. There were also verbal enquiries made regarding maternal deaths and where this was in the preceding 12 months where possible birth attendants were  interviewed and attempts were made to assess the levels and causes of maternal mortality. The qualitative research was also undertaken over several villages.  The study has many strengths, instead of based on statistics only there is the ability to gather the more subjective data, such as the attitudes surrounding pregnancy and childbirth  and why help is not sought unless there are major indications of a problem. Such as childbirth being seen as mysterious so there is no normal or abnormal.  The sample size is large and there is also a spread. However, the research was conducted over only two counties, and as such with  results may be valid for the area, but there is a risk that they may not be transferable. The use of verbal data regarding the maternal mortality may also result
