Barbie products as well  as other well known toys like Hot Wheels, American Girl and Uno products, are owned by Mattel. This company boasts 4.7 billion dollars in revenues annually. This company has a  glowing history but experienced problems in the latter part of the 1990s. The problems were financial, but nothing that many firms have not experienced. After all, this was the time  when the economy was headed toward recession. While the external environment is important, some believe that the problems were caused by ineffective leadership. Problem Statement  Did Mattel really need a change in leadership during the year 2000? Facts of the Case There was a lack of confidence in the leadership of Jill Barad,  despite the fact that she really did nothing especially poorly. She was criticized for the way she dressed and how she led the company, and some believe it is because  she is a woman. Her flamboyant nature was not always well received, but certainly, Barad contributed much to the success of the company. However, Robert Eckert demonstrated, after taking the  reigns from Jill, that new leadership can provide a sometimes necessary paradigm shift. Despite the fact that he did not do anything much better than Barad, there is a seeming  degree of confidence that was not there previously. But while Barad really did not demonstrate negative decisions, and the economy was doing poorly, it must be stated that in 2000,  the company stock was at an eight year low.
