children. There is however, another side of these works that address necessary lessons of life, such as friendship, loyalty and maturity. The exact manner in which these stories  and rhymes reveal the underpinning of enlightening tone is clear to all those who understand the capacity of such an occurrence. Indeed, while children are sometimes blind to such  illusory concepts, the extent to which the underlying messages ultimately rise to their conscious recognition is greater than many realize. One story that reaches to such heights and successfully  emblazons its message upon all who read it is Kenneth Grahames The Wind in the Willows. As Grahame indicates, childrens literature is the  expression of ones very soul, encompassing a great many emotions, feelings, and desires that can range from one spectrum to the other. Indeed, the combination of words and images  represented virtually everything in a childs story at that time, inasmuch as they consumed the tale with all of their perception: visual; olfactory; tactile; auditory; gustatory; and abstract. Often  represented in his story are rage, love, happiness, sorrow and despair, with the words providing an avenue for the author to release the inner struggles that can be set free  through no other means than verse. Indeed, the adventures of the Mole, Water Rat, Badger and Toad can be a catharsis to a childs ailing heart as much as  they can be a conduit between two otherwise strangers, acting as diverse a means of communication as any medium, even when that communication comes across harsh and telling. At  first, one may not plainly recognize the storys deeper assertions of friendship, loyalty and maturity beyond the telltale quiet and pastoral direction; however, there is no denying the fact that
