This is a critical review of the book that will focus on the Americans right to the  freedom of choice and how that freedom is compromised in our educational institutions. A proposed solution is recommended. THE DIALECTIC OF FREEDOM Throughout history from the time of  Thomas Jefferson to the present Americans have worked to exercise their right of freedom in many different ways. Maxine Greene expounds on this attempt through the years and points  out ways people have both failed and succeeded in expressing their individual freedoms through philosophy, education and other means. In writing about our freedoms, both through attempts and failures  throughout time, Greene seems to mostly emphasize the arts and how in many ways our freedom is compromised. This is to a great extent evident in our schools and  is very prevalent even today. In order to understand what Greene is trying to explain to us, we must have a thorough understanding of just what it means to have  freedom in order to accomplish something. When one is cast forward by way of determinism, it is as though one has absolutely no control over the various and sundry occurrences  that take place during ones life. Our free will, on the other hand, speaks to the concept of having full authority over ones aspirations and ultimate direction, reflecting the  exact opposite of those ruled by determinism. Having adequately grasped the meaning behind these divergent perspectives, it can easily be argued that life is ones own responsibility; instead of  leaving all things up to fate, an individual has a significant influence upon his or her own ultimate existence.
