a natural state and therefore, though it is an inspirational book, is somewhat insufficient for education about freedom. Many have defined freedom in various ways. Freedom, it can be  said, is defined depending on who one is, where one lives, who ones parents are, and even what ones own personal philosophies are. For example, suppose that someone from Nevada  decides that they want to become a prostitute. In Nevada, at least, they have the freedom of choice in that matter. In all other states that is considered a criminal  act. So, one definition of freedom could be mandated. In other words, one is free as long as the law says you are free to choose. It is this  type of questioning that Greene puts into her book, Dialectic of Freedom, in that she shows that progressivism is hard work. She questions long held beliefs, intellectual theories, and works her way deep into the root causes, in her opinion, of much of the social  and racial tension that tends to flourish these days. Greene seems to challenge the reader to envision a place where certain truths are not held to be self  evident. By doing this, then, she draws the reader into an inner examination of what one believes and why one believes it. One is also left puzzling about the way  in which one came to the original conclusion in the first place. Therefore, it comes back to the living in the moment. One must become more intentional and so  more aware of why we are doing what we are doing and to not sit idly by when issues arise, but to attack them at their root and question. Greene
