Bryan Babcock for the Paperstore, Inc., March 2001 Introduction The work of Maya Angelou has been applauded for decades. Her language has the natural  rhythm born of a poet. Even with her gifts, she too has many negative experiences and resents that any child should have to grow up in what she calls  "a second-class" citizenship. Through relating some of her own experiences, Angelou allows us to see them as alternative behaviors in the eradication of racism. The world is not  so small or so white or black that we might still learn from each other. Narrative writing style A narrative is just another name of telling a story. Angelou  tells the story of her life, which may also be termed an autobiography. An autobiography allows the author to tell those parts of his/her life in their own way,  or style. The way that a person writes their story will also give us more information about that person The elements in  a formal narrative will include tone, point of view, voice, and purpose (Canalori ppg). With Angelous work, the fun is that we get to shift each of these meanings.  The boundaries of definition for her work are more flexible than most, as it would seem that the life of this child has had to be more flexible than  most others as well (Olmsted ppg). Might we then say, that these more malleable definitions are reflected in the nature, of Angelous autobiography?
