    lifestyle. With the current social status and development the American lifestyle has been perceived as an aspiration. An example of the brand strength was seen after the Chinese embassy in  Belgrade was bombed by NATO during the war in Kosovo, Beijing students attempted to organise a boycott of American companies including McDonalds, even this did not impact on the business  (Watson, 2000). China has been one of McDonald corporations fastest-growing markets, although in recent years India has taken over. In terms of McDoanlds sales it is one of the  top 10 markets globally (Madden, 2005). The company has a high level of market power and core competencies in a range of key areas. These have included the way in  which strategic alliances in contracts of one, as seen with China Petroleum Corp1 and agreements to put drive-thrus on their garage sites (Business Week, 2007), as well as the real  estate company; one the group (Nations Restaurant News, 2006). Weaknesses McDonalds in China also has a number of weaknesses. They do appear to be some difficulties in understanding the real  cultural differences. In 2006 company had to withdraw an advertisement which insulted customers which would have been acceptable in many other countries (just-food.com, 2006, (b)). The different culture may also  be seen as a weakness as in some target markets United States may be falling out of favour. Recent political events and increased media attention on the US including coverage  of the Second Gulf War is creating a more negative perception. The high level of brand association with the US may also be seen as a weakness which may increase.  The internal structures appear to have a weak legal department. There have been several cases which have been brought and lost; this has included a fine of HK $7,000 for
