    case, is terrorism. In formulating a paper of this type, the student must first formulate a thesis or statement that must  be proven throughout the paper. In this case, the statement could involve a discussion about why studying terrorism at this time is so important, especially in light of the September  11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Although terrorism is by no means a new phenomenon, in the  wake of these - and other - attacks, more experts are attempting to both learn the reasons for terrorism and the motives of terrorists.  The purpose of this paper is to define terrorism, to discuss what it is (and isnt) and to examine some terrorist theories. The thesis statement, then, is  worded as follows: in light of growing global terrorism, this paper will attempt to define terrorism, by examining author Walter Laqueurs theories, to determine what, exactly, terrorism is, and how  it manifests. Before continuing with this essay, the student should be aware that sources cited will be done so using the APA  style. Terrorism according to Laqueur In his book, The New Terrorism: Fanaticism and the Arms of Mass Destruction, writer Walter Laqueur examines  125 years of religio-political violence that can be considered "terrorism." His main theory for terrorism, and reasons behind the acts of terrorism, are because terrorists have specific grievances against a  particular arm of government or another country (Laqueur, 1999).
