In "The Song of Roland" we are presented with a man, Roland, as well as other characters, who serve to represent  a struggle against the evils of the world, and figures who demonstrate such qualities as heroism and Christian virtue. In the following paper we examine "The Song of Roland" as  it offers the reader and understanding of the ideal Medieval character. The Song of Roland While there are several characters in "The Song of Roland" we focus primarily  on the character of Roland, with a brief examination of the King, Charlemagne, as well. With Roland we have a very brave and very noble knight. He is a man  who serves to represent all that is good in knights and in men, for a variety of reasons. In the beginning we see that he is a man who  serves Charlemagne without question. He is very loyal to Charlemagne and to Charlemagnes desire to win the war against the Saracens in Spain. The only strength left lies in the  Islamic individuals, a very clear indication that the story is heavily immersed in Christian ideals. We note that King Marsile has declared that if Charlemagne removes himself they will convert.  But, we find that this is only a trick. It was such realities as these that often led the Crusades against other nations. Of course, at this point in history  we understand that the Crusades were less than noble or righteous in many ways, but in relationship to the story at hand we focus on the noble aspects, or the  noble presumptions of the Medieval individuals. And, in this respect we find that Charlemagne is weary of such deceit and wishes only to bring the one true religion to the
