This may be accompanied by other goals, but for most organisations this is the primary goal. When the student considers the case of  the merger between Compaq and Hewlett Packard (HP) hey need to undertake this against the background of perceived benefits that companies may gain form mergers and acquisitions. In moats cases  there is a perception of increased value with the merger, due to the elimination of duplicate functions, such as head offices and management structures and customer services. In addition to  the economies of scope and/or scale that may be attractive to goal may be increased market share. Yet in reality the additional value is often lacking, with the only benefit  being realised being the increased market share. There is also the possibility that newer and more integrated solutions with more information form a single source to make life easier for  the consumer. Therefore the merger may be seen as a good move for both the company and the consumer. The merger between these to companies may be seen in  both positive and negative lights. The student should be able to argue both of these sides. In considering the issue we can also use a quote from a solutions provider;  senior vice president of client services and business development at AMC; Mark Romanowski; "I look as this not so much in terms of the companies making a right or wrong
