    Mexican literature offers a wide gamut of style and subject matter. Of particular interest is the way different writers chose to present their information.  Some chose a discursive appropriation while others use formal appropriation. There are of course many sub-categorizations below this level as well in Mexican literature. Two recent books  are particularly useful in allowing us to examine the contrast in literary style which exist in Mexican literature. These books are Ruben Martinezs "Crossing Over: A Mexican Family on  the Migrant Trail" and Victor Valles "Recipe of Memory : Five Generations of Mexican Cuisine". Both the style and the subject matter of these two books are decisively different  yet they each represent many components of Mexican literature as a whole. The presentation style in Valles "Recipe of Memory" is decidedly more  formal than that which is found in Martinezs "Crossing Over". Interestingly, however, "Recipe of Memory" is in many ways a hodgepodge of different formats. While presented as a  cook book, the contents of the book ranges from hand-traced family recipes from 1888, to exerpts from historical journals, to old photographs. In effect, the book represents some of  the more intimate reflections of five generations of the authors family. The book presents both personal and social insight into the circumstances which shaped this family. It is  a blend of politics and food, family stories and historical fact. Indeed, its most interesting segments are not the recipes themselves but the chapters devoted to detailing such social  aspects as womens education in the nineteenth century.
