BBmnoanR.doc ARTFUL DEFINITIONS OF THE MINOAN SOCIETY Written by for the Paperstore, Inc.,  October 2000 Introduction: When we try to investigate Minoan society we encounter a number of problems regarding the evidence. Because the climate is frequently wet, most of  the perishable evidence has disappeared with the weather. This makes it hard to construct a picture of Minoan society. We have some knowledge about Minoan people, of course, but this  is very fragmentary: only little aspects of the Minoan social life are ever revealed at one time, mainly because the written materials are so few, and because scholars can read  only a very little of this written evidence. The Minoans as a society were much more advanced than others of their time. Their cities were well organized with strong evidence  of early civil engineering. Roadways and building were laid out according to traffic volume and direction, as well as residential offset from dense commercial areas; this differs from the  later Roman cities. In addition, Minoans had indoor plumbing and a system of efficient waste removal. They built great palaces whose walls were covered with frescos, wall paintings of freshly  laid plaster. Women appear to have played a prominent role in Minoan society. This is apparent in religious art; images of women appear as frequently as those of men. Archaeological  Evidence: The Minoan civilization began prior to 6000 BC on the island of Crete. Exact dates are difficult to establish, again, because of a lack of written evidence or
