    many challenges to reach its current passion, with the battle to get the genetically modified agricultural products onto the market against the environmental activists and also with the high level  of investment and resulting bad debt that this created. Sales have not been as high as thought possible with the barriers poised by the fears of genetic modification and  the ban put in place in the EU having a knock on effect in the US. In addition to this the initial agreements for the sale of the seed which  was more expensive than non-modified seed, but had a high level off satisfied farmers where sued also had a restrictive agreement. Farmers could not reuse seed from the crop and  initially were required to allow the company inspectors to make sure this was not the case. They were also tied into using the roundup products where needed. The lower level  of sales, which were still growing led investment analysts to have concerns over the companys ability to pay debt after one merger fell through another with Pharmacia took place giving  the company increased financial stability and adding a range of products and abilities to Pharmacias own to allow it to compete more effectively. 2. Analysis and Critical Strategic Issues A.  External Analysis for Opportunities and Threats There is a trend in the US for more and more genetically modified food to be planted this increases yield and decreases the cost  of pesticides and chemical treatments. This increases potential sales, but there is also less demand for goods that are to go to the EU and for sales in the EU  as a result of the moratorium which is a threat. The roundup licence has expired and is seeing increasing competition for this market seeking to tie in seed customers
