in the 1920s by Hans Spermann. Thus, it has been around for decades. Of course, Gregor Mendel had done some experimentation with cloning in the 1850s working with pea plants  (The Science, Ethics, and Benefits of Human Cloning, 2000). Cloning has been an element in science fiction stories for many years. People typically thought it was an interesting concept but  it would never be used on living creatures. BUT, then came Dolly, a sheep cloned from adult DNA cells. Dolly created an uproar across the world. Then came Polly. Polly  was a cloned sheep also but her genes had been altered to produce a specific protein in her milk (The Science, Ethics, and Benefits of Human Cloning, 2000). Dolly was  successfully mated with a live ram and produced a baby. How long will it be until humans are cloned. The fact that these sheep were cloned and the fact  that news media have reported other cloning attempts of animals has brought the possibility of cloning humans very close to home. As with any remarkable development, there are both  benefits and disadvantages to human cloning. Many people believe that human cloning will be of great benefit to the human race. Consider the benefits that have been cited regarding human  cloning, which also includes cloning specific organs: * ? ???An end to heart disease. Scientists might be able to clone healthy heart cells and inject them into the parts of the  heart that have been damaged. This would end the number one killer in the world - heart disease. * * ???* ???Recently, there has been progress with embryonic stem cells, which allows  them to be grown to produce organs or tissues to replace those that are damaged. Examples: new skin could be made for burn victims; spinal cord cells could be cloned
