    motivated individuals, others seem to draw those who work only because necessity calls and the look on their face when a customer approaches makes that reality obvious. Its  sad actually when one stops to consider just how many people we encounter each day in the world and just how many of those people appear to be miserable.  What ever happened to excitement, and enthusiasm in the workplace? In short, what ever happened to motivation? Why is it so many people seem to be lacking this  critical component and what can employers do to encourage motivation? In order to fully understand how to motivate people though, it is important to understand the basics of motivation  itself. Theories of Motivation Abraham Maslow - Hierarchy of Needs: One theory of motivation stems from Abraham Maslow  and his theories which are based on his idea of hierarchy of needs (Abraham Maslows Hierarchy of Needs, 2002, See also Owston, 2002, See also Theories of Motivation, 2002).  Basically, his idea of hierarchy of needs dictates that every person has various needs, some of which are more important and more powerful than others (Abraham Maslows Hierarchy of Needs,  2002, See also Owston, 2002). Furthermore, according to Maslow, until the very basic needs of a person are met, other, more sophisticated needs cannot be met (Abraham Maslows Hierarchy  of Needs, 2002). Its a sort of progression - basic needs first, then less pressing needs (Abraham Maslows Hierarchy of Needs, 2002). For example, whos going to worry  about whether they are experiencing job satisfaction or not if there is no food to put on the table. Obviously, the first concern is to eat. Then, on
