religion. Certain scripture regularly challenged women to disprove that they were inferior-to not agree was heresy. When religion did not work alone, scientific theory was included as a  factor in the equation that supported the ideal that women are inferior. Sojourner Truth defied all the patriarchal influence that came before and sought to carve out a new  path for her oppressed female counterparts. Truth went to bat for every woman when she spoke before a crowd of "hostile white" (Simon C34) people at the 1851 Ohio Womens  Rights Convention, who were in no mood to hear what she had to say. When the student begins the critical analysis, it will be important to note that after  gaining permission to convey her message, the nearly six-foot-tall muscular black woman took hold of that crowd with a defiance and assertion uncharacteristic of the black race at that time.  Throughout her short but impassioned speech, Truth held the audience in the palm of her hand, bravely asserting her opinions with regard to womens rights. Indeed, she did  not apologize for her forceful tone or powerful declaration; rather, that proved to be her strategy by which she would ultimately win support in the continuing fight for womens rights.  With the very first line, Truth exposes her defiance toward the systems rules, which, as she points out, have all been designed by men, for men. Eloquent in both  style and approach, Truth does not allow her gender to get in the way of insisting that nowhere in the framework of human rights has it been established that men  are in any way more deserving than women.
