                                                    three centuries, from the American and French Revolutions right up to the nationalistic movements of the 1960s through the 1980s.  We must question ourselves, however, just how did this   
                                                
                                                    sense of nationalism arise?  This question is particularly applicable in the countries of Brazil, Germany, and Mexico.  What is revealed on a close consideration of the histories of   
                                                
                                                    each of these countries is that there is a similarity in the factors which inspired the rise of nationalism.        Nationalism, of course, is   
                                                
                                                    in reality an ideology.  It is an ideology which has shaped the face of the world as we see it today and an ideology which goes hand-in-hand with the   
                                                
                                                    ideologies of liberalism and conservatism.  Nationalism is often inextricably tied in fact to the concepts of freedom and liberty.  Such is not always the case, however.  Many
