Cummings "The First Sessions with Substance Abusers" we  have a book which enlightens the therapist as well as the substance abuser, giving perhaps more hope to those who still have options. It is a book which illustrates that  many substance abusers are not accurately pegged or diagnosed on the first visit, leaving the substance abuser to continue with their patterns of behavior until it is sometimes too late.  In this book the authors, a father and daughter team, present some very valid and informative clues and approaches that can assist both the therapist and the abuser in the  very first session, the session that is incredibly crucial in the treatment of substance abusers. In the following paper we examine and analyze the Cummings work. The First  Session with Substance Abusers One of the most important, and perhaps most surprising and informative, realities concerning substance abusers, according to the Cummings, is that 80 percent of the time  the substance abusers go undiagnosed, or are misdiagnosed, during the first session of treatment. In addition these people are normally only going to the lengths to visit a therapist because  their families insist that there is a problem. The abusers rarely accept the fact that they have a problem. In light of this we find that there is a great  deal missing in terms of interpreting signs, etc., when making an initial diagnosis concerning the abuser. The Cummings, therefore, present a very real and very readable examination of how to  access the truth within the very first session with a substance abuser, making the treatment perhaps more effective in the long run.
