    A 12 page paper discussing effects of chronic pain and proposing a pilot program based on Healing Touch. Chronic pain can interfere with immune function, ability to sleep, ability to eat normally and ability to participate in work or leisure activities.     can be traced to a specific cause that can be addressed effectively, there are still an estimated 48 million people suffering from chronic pain in the United States. Accounting  for 140 million doctor visits annually, the total personal and financial cost of chronic pain is more than only significant. This type of  pain negatively affects individuals quality of life. It can interfere with immune function, ability to sleep, ability to eat normally and ability to participate in work or leisure activities.  Chronic pain is defined as that which persists after the individual has suffered a serious injury; arises from unknown causes; or that which is associated with conditions such as  arthritis or lower back pain. Though pain is seen as being the bodys "alarm system" alerting the individual to the need for medical attention, medicine is not always able  to alleviate patients chronic pain. The purpose here is to design, implement and evaluate a non-drug chronic pain management program based on the alternative approach of Healing Touch. Aggregate  and Assessment Data The aggregate in the current study consists of a group of 15 patients of Kaiser Permanente, ranging in age from  18 to 89 years old. All of the members of the aggregate have been referred to the alternative program by a physician, ensuring that they truly are suffering from  chronic pain. Most have exhausted all of the other options they have found to be open to them, including mainstream medicine, surgery, physical therapy and extending even to alternative  medicine. To some extent, each member of the aggregate under study reports having experienced at least one of the characteristics of the pain
