    social effects. Still, obesity has reached great proportions. It is estimated that about one-third of U.S. adults between the ages of 20 and 74 weigh too much ("Obesity," 1994). This  puts people at risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, some forms of cancer and arthritis (1994). First, what is obesity exactly? Obesity is a condition when too  much body fat presents itself ("American," 2002). It is not necessarily a sign that a person has lost control (2002). In fact, the myth is that all obese  people overeat or eat huge quantities of food, and while in some instances that is true, it is not characteristic of obesity. While many people know when they are  obese, there are many people on the borderline, or people who are obese and do not realize it. In order to determine who is obese, a weight must be taken,  but that is not the only measurement needed to determine true obesity. Obtaining BMI or Body Mass Index is key to figuring out whether or not one is obese; with  the use of a BMI calculator one can determine just how overweight they are (2002). There are three categories of obesity and between 30 to 34.9 one is in  the first class of obesity; with 40 or more points one is considered to be severely obese (2002). It is not difficult to determine who is obese. Again, most  people do know that they are overweight and many individuals have been told time and time again by their doctors. They may be the subject of ridicule and they realize,  when they look in the mirror, that they are larger than average. While defining obesity is rather easy as the precise definition conforms to a calculation involving height and weight,
