has changed dramatically over the past several years, and of course management and operations of business gains the greatest share of attention of those involved in it. In this
age of globalization, it is far more likely for senior management to be discussing cultural differences and pursuit of other markets than it is that they would be giving any
attention to management of the facilities that house the organizations efforts. This is as it should be, for facilities management well done equates
to invisibility. Only when the air conditioning fails, electrical problems arise or places that should be clean are not does facilities management gain any direct attention, that that attention,
of course, is negative. Nevertheless, the value of efficient and well-managed facilities management is evident in that it contributes to the more efficient management of the organization. The Managers
Role The individual filling this position truly must be all things to all people. S/he must be able to communicate effectively with
the organizations highest level managers as well as with employees not subordinate to it and those workers involved in facilities maintenance and management. The manager must be able to
manage large projects, even though s/he may never need to actually perform that function. Any large projects likely will be outsourced, but it will be the facilities manager who
acts as the liaison between the organization and the contractor(s) (Program Overview). Ultimately, communication is the facilities managers single most important tool.
S/he must be able to communicate with all types of people, of all backgrounds and of all educational levels. S/he needs to be able to deal with the self-important
