Nelson - August 2001 paper properly!  Relative to the myriad of minutiae that can be said about todays business world in general -- one thing can be said  with confidence - todays market is tough. Furthermore, the battle for initial, (then subsequently and even more importantly) repeat business is critical to an organizations long-term success in this  modern-day, intensely competitive marketplace. Moreover, todays customers are more demanding and the pressure on companies is ever increasing to improve products/ services while reducing consumer costs.  However, interestingly enough most organizations do not find out about their unhappy customers until it is too late, and as a consequence they lose the all-important repeat business  (Sull, 1999). Therefore, clear definitions/ delineations are imperative to the overall strategy process for an organizations continued competitive effectiveness (Kaplan and Norton, 1996 and See  Also Mintzberg and Quinn, 1996). After decades of relative neglect theories relevant to the corporation have again become one of  the most rapidly expanding research areas in economics. It has become obvious that no organization is an island unto itself. All organizations -- large or small, business  or non-profit -- operate within the constructs and environments that simultaneously stimulate and constrain their structure and actions.
