    changing at such a rapid pace we have seen personal computers impact our lives in many different ways. Socially, economically and industry-wise the personal computer and its history are  described in this well-written and concise paper. SOME COMPUTER HISTORY In the 1970s the personal computer was virtually unknown to the average citizen except for what they had seen  in movies. Thinking of the gigantic room-sized computers that took hours to crank out information was about as close as most citizens came to knowing anything about what a  computer was or did. The mid-eighties however marked the beginning for the "countrys largest direct seller of personal computers" (The Dell Story 2002, PG). Michael Dell first began constructing  his company from his dorm room at the University of Texas-Austin, often taking drastic measures -- such as hiding his computers in the bathtub -- to make sure that no  one suspected his sideline. The business that emanated from this dorm room eventually became known as Dell Computer Corporation in May of 1984. Within a matter of two  short years, Dell had taken on two hundred and fifty employees, at which point it was ready and able to introduce the 286-12 machine. This single piece of equipment was  heralded by PC Week as very possibly being the next industry benchmark. Interestingly, what was speedy back then is considered a dinosaur now, with the Intel Pentium II and  III processors being far better than one hundred times faster than the original (The Dell Story 2002). The years between 1992 and 1994 represented another surge of growth for the  personal computer. In 1992, personal computers were put on the market with the sole intention of being a very reasonably-priced alternative to the competitors higher-priced product. As a
