Definition Paraplegia is defined  as paralysis that impacts the lower part of the body, which affects both legs and sometimes internal organs below the waist ("Paraplegia"). The type and extent of paralysis depends on  where, exactly, on the spinal cord the injury occurred ("Paraplegia"). Damage to the lowest part of the spinal cord may result in paralyzed legs only; while damage further up could  also impact control of the bladder and rectum, meaning that catheterization and urine bags could be the faithful companion of a paraplegic ("Paraplegia").  The causes of paraplegia are varied, but the most frequent causes are due to injuries that either sever the spinal cord completely or that damage some of the nervous  tissue in the cord ("Paraplegia").
