This is an excellent position paper that can  be adapted to many different situations. A PROFESSIONAL DECISION The most difficult decision I have made in five years was that of laying off one of my employees.  Being the owner of a small company that has been operating for more than ten years, I was faced with a difficult decision. The company at the time employed  forty people and there is no union in place. In response to a need for increased productivity, the company had purchased some new, efficient machinery. This new technology  allowed us not only to eliminate overtime, but also to lay off one production employee. Because the company had never developed a layoff policy, the decision was mine alone to  make without having set a precedent. The option came down to one of three employees, each of whom had been an excellent and loyal worker for the company.  There was at that time no retirement plan in place, with no grounds for a lawsuit pending at that time. The employee who was to be laid off  would be eligible to receive unemployment benefits for six months and would be eligible for COBRA for six months as well. ALTERNATIVES FOR RESOLVING THE ISSUE The only alternative  I had for resolving the issue would have been to keep all the employees and not acquire the new machinery. I could not have afforded to do both things.  Because the new machinery represented new technology in the business that would be important in the coming years, the decision was made that the machinery had to be purchased
