PPprscrp.rtf Prescriptive Authority for Pharmacists by - 5 Nov 2001 -- for more information  on using this paper properly!  Highly respected among the general public for years, pharmacist are slowly increasing the role they play in counseling patients and even providing clinical services.  Pharmacists recognize their area of expertise and are beginning to firmly insist that they are an integral, not peripheral, part of the health care system. Interestingly, pharmacists have  had the authority to write prescriptions for some time in the Indian Health Bureau and the Veterans Administration Hospital System (NYSCHP, 2001). This has been a privilege which has  made them an even more integral part of the overall health care system of these agencies. Unfortunately, the attempts of pharmacists to move into the mainstream of patient/health care  professional interaction outside of these two agencies have been perceived by physicians as an infringement into an area in which doctors have previously held an almost uncontested monopoly. The  purpose of this paper is to provide information which will allow the student to evaluate such perceptions and to weigh them against what is known regarding the advantages and disadvantages
