classic poets works such as Tennyson, Keats, Browning and Wordsworth. The paper suggests that Tennysons treatment of the female gender is quite different from that of the other authors.  Bibliography lists 6 sources. SA137fem.rtf Poets have dealt with women in a variety of ways. Tennyson in particular seems to have a unique take on women, and  sees them almost as ethereal. A student writing on this subject will want to compare the specific components of Tennysons work that reference females, or a particular female, and compare  it to other poets. First, in looking at some of the authors works, "The Lady of Shallot" provides much food for thought. In "The Lady of Shallot," it is clear  that the authors treatment of women is odd. He looks at them almost as if they are not people, but rather, as creatures to intrigue men. It appears from his  writing, and at least in terms of the focus of "The Lady of Shallot," that there is a mysterious edge that seeps through his writing. Tennyson asks: "But who hath  seen her wave her hand? " (Tennyson The Lady of Shallot PG). It is as if he is questioning her existence, or as if women were alien creatures, and not  like men at all. In addition to looking at this the Lady of Shallot in particular, a student might want to also point out that Tennyson looks at other  women in the same work. He describes "the red cloaks of market girls" (PG) and again, a sense of objectification looms large. Tennyson simply does not see women as  human beings. There is a hint that he might be afraid of them, or at least have little experience with the opposite sex.
