    Through the pages of Nelson Mandela and David Goodman these two different sources paint their own pictures of what it has been like living through the difficulties faced by this  nation. SOUTH AFRICA: LAND OF TURMOIL For nearly as long as man has existed, racism has been driving a wedge between the Caucasian race and all other ethnicities.  Somewhere back in the beginning of civilization and continuing in throughout the European colonization, an unwritten law came into effect that proclaimed the White race as one that was better  than all others, much more deserving of lifes benefits and privileges, and free to ravage. This attitude has carried down through the centuries, despite much effort on all sides  to abolish such prejudicial practices. The social, political, economical and religious activities experienced in everyday life as represented in David Goodmans Fault Lines: Journeys into the New South Africa  exemplify the very essence of what it means to be a human being. These representations illustrate how and why the village of South Africa have experienced the ravages of  identity when the Europeans colonized. NELSON MANDELA In this fascinating account of Africa under Apartheid, Mandela tells of the oppressor and the oppressed and the reader gets the feeling  of having been there. This autobiography is at once fascinating and unbelievable, torturous and sometimes funny; but underneath it all lies the inescapable fact that there is still a  very long way to go in the search for freedom. As a solution to Africas long-time problems, this writer urges us to think beyond the normal boundaries. These boundaries  would be well to be re-thought. In this way, countries such as South Africa which have a low gross domestic product should be bigger in order to produce more,
