    was the effect felt more severely, however, than in the travel and tourism industry. Already facing uncertainty due to a perceived economic slowdown before the terrorist attacks, the industrys economic  picture went into a deep, almost instantaneous depression after Sept. 11. Though some sectors of the industry, notably major travel destinations and hotels, have seen a moderate recovery in the  weeks since the attacks, other sectors, including travel agencies and airlines, are still looking at a grim picture, with travel agencies in particular wondering if they as a group can  survive at all. Even for the rest of the sector, their "recovery" still leaves revenues significantly down from last years. Clearly, the first facet of the tourism industry to suffer  from the attacks was the airline industry. Though possibly not technically a part of the tourism industry itself, the airline industry is inextricably connected to it in all facets, as  became apparent within a matter of days after the attacks. The airlines found themselves losing money - literally by the millions - within minutes after the first attack, as airports  were shut down nationwide (Business Week, 2001). As the nationwide shutdown continued, the losses mounted, and one ailing carrier, Midway Airlines, which had sought Chapter 11 protection before the tragedy,  closed its doors and stranded many of its passengers and aircrew literally in mid-trip, before the airports even reopened. When air travel did get underway again, things did not look  that much better. Airlines were overwhelmed with cancellations, and new bookings were way down. To top it off, some of the major airports remained shut down until new security  measures could be put in place, meaning that many travelers who were motivated to fly could not, because the places they needed to go were not accepting arrivals.
