    been modified - from screening procedures to outfitting airplanes with marshals to inspecting the food placed onboard to feed passengers - is indicative of a far more prudent and methodical  approach to airport safety. Among these changes, however, has been a trend to remove incumbent security screeners in lieu of those who are more highly trained - as well  as American citizens - to detect the smallest nuance of suspicion. This move toward outfitting an entirely new security workforce, according to critics, is both unfair and unnecessary; proponents  contend, however, that the unequivocal demand for more stringent safety measures at Americas airports requires a better qualified individual - mentally, physically and culturally - to carry out the newly  implemented procedures. "Today, safety and security are global concerns. Wherever we work, all of us in the aviation community are committed to uniformly high standards - standards that  are being raised to higher levels with each passing year" (Belger, 1998, p. PG). II. STRENGTHENING THE SYSTEM No matter ones incumbent status as a screener at airports across  the nation, if an individual is not able to pass the modified procedure of passenger screening, that individual is out of a job. According to the federal government, the  importance of newly implemented procedures is not to be compromised by someone who cannot maintain strict screening standards. Said Steve Elson, former FAA checkpoint security inspector, "Theyre missing all  kinds of things...Thats the frightening part" (Anonymous #2, 2002). Prior to 911, the importance of airport screening was just as critical as it is today; however, there was a  distinct sense of complacency throughout the industry, allowing for myriad mistakes to be made without incidence.
