he or she gives power away. In The Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner (2007) wrote, "you become more powerful when you give your power away" (p. 251). Exemplary leaders have
always known that it is important for their followers to feel capable and efficacious and the best way to help them feel this way is by giving them power (Kouzes
and Posner, 2007). When people feel powerless they grasp on to whatever power they have. In the workplace, employees always have power and control over what they do and could
simply hold back on productivity to make themselves feel powerful. As Kouzes and Posner (2007) suggest, the term empowerment has become very popular. This term has been so overused that
is can conjure up negative images and thoughts in an employees mind. Part of the problem may be that the concept of empowerment is not very well understood in organizations
(Emerson 2008). This is evidenced by the different definitions and explanations of the concept. The most commonly-used definition for empowerment is: "a process of enabling an employee to think,
behave, act, react, and control their work in more autonomous ways, as to be in control of ones own destiny" (Emerson 2008, p. 8). This explanation of the concept does
