    Leaders have to wield power in order to be leaders. However, there are many types of power, which may come from a range of sources and powerbases.     a range of sources, this well depend on the personality, characteristics and values of the leader. With each type and source of power there will also be different levels of  effectiveness in the short and the long term. Authoritarian or autocratic leaders will gain their power from the position they hold. This is likely to be a leader in a  bureaucratic organisation, where the power is associated with the position (Huczyniski and Buchanan, 1996). In many instances power will be associated with a position, the issue is not of the  power, but the way it is used. An autocratic leader will expect to lead without question, there wil be no discussion or consultation and power is assumed and then may  be used to force though ideas or values. Power used in this manner may not always be effective, and in some organisations  may be see as an abuse of power that clashes with culture where the human relations school of thought is used as the basis for HRM practices. However, to state  that this is a bad approach is also short sighted. It will not gain loyalty or motivate so as a long term approach this type of power can be destructive,  but in some situations where quick decision making and clear direction is needed this can be a good approach. For example, in an emergency situation there sis not time for  discussion, a leader needs to be able to direct this may be in the police force and managing the force or in an event such as fire. However, it is  also worth noting that this type of authority and power can be adopted for short-term use when appropriate if a leader knows how to adopt and how to release this
