There are many instances where prayers are said with a cause in mind, these may be general wishes  for peace and goodwill, or they may be more specific such as for the cure of an illness. It is payer that faith healing in based upon. The claim is  that it is the power of prayer that heals. There are several alternative hypothesis , which one is believed is determined as a matter of faith, the first is that  on some occasions prayer causes intervention from a higher being to accede to their wishes. Another is that it is the power of prayer is one that is psychological, a  belief that there will be a change and a commitment to accepting that change and expecting it will make the prayer become a self fulfilling prophecy. In both cases it  is the prayer that is the cause and of the resultant effect. The third hypothesis is that nothing actually occurs, and that there is not cause and effect relationship, other  than potentially the illusion of a change where none really occurs. If we are considering cause and effect then it is the first two hypothesises that we need to consider.  The intervention for a higher being, is seen as a matter of faith, and as such proof is difficult to obtain, as demanding proof may be seen as deny faith.  However, there have been many instances of apparent miracles that have found to be faked or fraudulent. Miracles are often very hard to prove, as in many cases it may  be argued that there were other factors, and the power opf self belief can be evidenced when we look at the power of placebos.
