an issue that has been discussed since religions have enforced rules regarding sex for several thousands of years. Over time however, society has changed but many of these rules have  not. Couples today who may seek guidance from their church in regards to how to ethically and morally treat their fellow man have allowed themselves some independent thought in regards  to several issues and laws pertaining to the church and pre-marital sex is one of them. The society of the time when pre-marital sex was first prohibit showed a shorter  length of time between maturity and marriage, no way of preventing sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy, a woman was dependant on her father or her husband for her welfare and  traditional roles for men and women were more widely accepted than they are today. This being said, when couples are married or not, they feel that in todays society the  most important factors for deciding on sexual relations are actually those of maturity and commitment. In the traditional Presbyterian church, the ethics and  church rules which were applied regarding pre-marital sex were first written by Paul in the first century. Obviously society has changed substantially in the past two thousand years and the  guidelines used to prohibit pre-marital sex are substantially different. In the first century, a woman was considered the property of her father and if she was not a virgin when  she was married then she was considered devalued and this brought direct shame upon her fathers house (Religious Tolerance 2002). In addition, there was no reliable methods of birth control  or prevention from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), no treatment for STDs and an unmarried woman with a child would be essentially abandoned and have a great deal of difficulty surviving.
