and title. Slide 2 - Components of the System The UPMC is a multifaceted health care system consisting not only of several types
of health care providers but also health care insurance in the form of an HMO. The system grew from the medical center of the University of Pittsburgh to include
many types of health care providers. These include 19 hospitals, 2 surgery centers, 1 cancer center and 12 retirement and long-term care facilities. Providing access to all of
these services is an expanding health insurance HMO. Slide 3 - Organizational Structure The care facilities, medical school and HMO insurer all work
in concert to positively affect UPMCs bottom line. The HMO is the primary player in terms of financial resources, of course, but that does not seem to diminish the
roles that care facilities and the medical school play in the organizational structure of UPMC Health System. Slide 4 - Dynamic Tensions Establishing
the HMO provided Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield with competition it did not formerly have. The effects of competition include reducing and monitoring prices, even as demand rises.
UPMCs presence in the local market prevents Highmark from indiscriminately increasing health insurance premiums across the board. Slide 5 - Role of the HMO
UPMC operates more as a business than as a health care provider. It actively markets to those that other insurers disdain. As example, it greatly expanded its
