There are many means by  which a presidential candidate is chosen and this process is very interesting in that it is a fundamental activity in this country and certainly has bearing on our individual freedoms  and way of life. The Process of Selecting Presidential Candidates Presidential primaries are the standard mode of presidential candidate selection  in this country (Deimel, 2002). "The broad outlines of the current system flow from two objectives-the desire to make selection more "democratic" and the need to test the candidates"  (Deimel, 2002). One of the problems with the primaries process however is that they are held at different times, thereby effectively negating the votes of many states if the  votes of prior states are able to determine a clear leader (Deimel, 2002). It can even be said that the campaign process itself is a definite "weeding  out" vehicle (Deimel, 2002). Over the course of a long and drawn-out campaign, there is much information which can, and usually does, come to light about any particular candidate  (Deimel, 2002). It isnt at all uncommon for "skeletons" to emerge from closets and for the public to be provided with a plethora of information in regards to the  candidate - often more information than they want or need (Deimel, 2002). However, the grueling campaign process indeed provides voters with insight into the candidate in terms of  how they respond to pressure, what is actually revealed over time about the candidate, how they handle scandal, etc. (Deimel, 2002).
