person would agree to say that a community facing rising incidence of family violence could be described as an attractive one, but the costs of family violence extend far beyond  the individuals directly affected by it. It robs the entire community of its future and of the present it could be enjoying, and it diminishes the quality of life  of all members of the community. Prevention on several levels can result in benefits that can be described as being far greater than the sum of their parts.  The purpose here is to identify and discuss points of primary and tertiary prevention of family violence and implications for the community.  Definitions: Primary and Tertiary Prevention Primary "Primary prevention is defined as both the prevention of disease before it occurs and the reduction of  its incidence" (Bethea, 1999). In the context of family violence, primary prevention is represented by any intervention that prevents incidence of violence before they occur. This can include  stress management training for families, community-based education about the origins and nature of family violence or other such interventions. Police involvement is beneficial  in that it brings a measure of security to those threatened by family violence, but police involvement does not fall into the realm of primary prevention. Police become involved  only after the fact; primary prevention lies in increasing awareness and offering alternative means of dealing with a violent family member.  Tertiary The third level of prevention, tertiary prevention, aims to reduce the consequences of the conditions that already exist (Tertiary Prevention, 2002).
