Ted Conover, a journalist who wanted  to find out firsthand just what it took to command respect from prison inmates, spent a year of his life as a correctional officer in order to achieve this somewhat  dangerous objective. Voluntarily spending time in the nations second largest maximum security prison is not a challenge most people would take; however, when the objective to both experience and  understand the shrouded world that exists outside of the public eye is brought on by oneself, the formidable task is pursued. Such was the case with Conovers journalistic research  behind Newjack : Guarding Sing Sing. Refused entry to capture this unseen community as a journalist, Conover took the alternative route of becoming a corrections officer; what he finds  on the inside after months of intensive training is a world unlike anything about which he had ever read. "Tantalized by some visits to prisons and concluding that I  was unlikely to ever really understand prison from outside the walls, I took the officer exam myself. Two years later I entered Sing Sing as a newjack."1 The life  to which Conover was privy was not one he would choose for himself if he had fancied a position of great power and authority. Indeed, one of the most  enlightening lessons the author learned during his tenure as a Sing-Sing corrections officer was that inmates had the upper hand in most situations regarding everyday tasks, an observation that provided  him with significant insight as to the typically accepted issues surrounding prisoners and respect.
