Developing a case study for each area provides the student with a means by which to illustrate  a potential breach of professional ethics and, as well, to address each situation with regard to corrective actions. Considering all the various entities of "realistic ethical counseling dilemmas" (Frame  et al, 1997, p. 107) within the industry, there is a great deal of room for unethical behavior. II. COMPETENCE Jill was in need of an understanding ear; since  her mothers death, she was unable to keep order in her life and she thought talking with a professional would steer her back upon the right path. The meeting  with Dr. Ingersol went well and relatively painlessly, in spite of Jills trepidation towards seeking psychiatric help. What she really wanted to know was how to retain her mothers  loving image yet not let it continue to distract her from her own life. "Create an aversion to these thoughts," said Dr. Ingersol, " by retraining your mind to  think only of your mothers unfavorable traits." "I dont want to remember only the bad things about her," Jill replied, caught off guard by such a suggestion. "If  you want to rid yourself of the distraction of your mothers memory," the doctor continued, "you must establish a divergent thought process in order to achieve this. In effect,  make yourself believe she is not worth remembering." The criteria used to determine breach of ethics include the doctors advice and his obvious incompetence in relation to handling grief-stricken patients.  Action to be taken might include significant retraining as to the fundamentals of psychological counseling.
