    School shootings, hostage situations within the schools, violence against teachers, weapons which are brought to school by students - all of these frightening occurrences require action. Today the  fear and risk of violence within schools is a real concern, and students, teachers, administrators, and parents must all work together to combat this problem, and that is the goal  of the S.A.V.E. program. Programs such as S.A.V.E. are gaining momentum throughout the country, as other states and school systems recognize  the need for preventative action as well. The New York program attempts to facilitate safer schools through a variety of methods, ranging from empowering teachers to instituting preventative programs.  The S.A.V.E. Program The S.A.V.E. program, which is formally referred to as Safe Schools Against Violence in Education, was signed  into law on July 24, 2000 by New York Governor George Pataki (S.A.V.E. - An Overview and Advice to Locals, 2003, See also Making Schools Safe, 2003). The basic  principle of the law is to make schools safer in New York State and to give teachers more authority and opportunity for involvement in their classrooms and in terms of  district policies (S.A.V.E. - An Overview and Advice to Locals, 2003 Making Schools Safe, 2003). Schools in the state of  New York are required to adhere to the codes of conduct which this law outlines, and must work together with students, teachers, parents and administrators to develop their specific codes/system  (S.A.V.E. - An Overview and Advice to Locals, 2003, See also Project S.A.V.E., 2003).
