used in various capacities but whole new future worlds are possible. The recent release of Steven Spielbergs AI has provided food for thought. What if a robot could feel? That  question was brought to life when the protagonist who was just a machine wanted to be a real boy. Throughout the film, there is a sense that the robot is  really having human emotion and so the line between artificial intelligence becomes more muddled each day. The concept of artificial intelligence is something that the future may possess, but presently,  the field of robotics is rather powerful and useful in manufacturing as well as in other realms. In order to develop robotics, programming must be initiated and so, attention must  be paid to the topic of robot programming techniques and languages used presently and in the past. What might come in the future as a result is also important  as robotics is indeed the wave of the future. It is also important to recognize that important changes that programming languages have gone through, primarily in concert  with changes in hardware and the needs or users. Yet, the computer language has undergone a revolution and that fact cannot be ignored. Schank & Riesbeck (1981) present programs  which are based on a theory of language as well as language processing but they point out that while they had been developing the languages over a period of  twelve years, their theory had undergone a great deal of changes during that period. II. Online Versus Off-line Programming Off-line programming in design engineering  is actually the process of creating a program for a machine that is away from the machine itself ("Academic Press," 2002). In respect to robotics specifically, it is
