Introduction Project management is a broad subject; there are many elements to the management of a successful project, from the initial planning stages to  the competition stages, which involve, planning, forecasting controlling and assessing. Within this there are many skills that need to be used, from the basic communication and organization skills to potential  specialist knowledge and experience. To develop a robust and viable project plan it is essential to understand different aspects of the project management process, not only the planning aspects,  but the way in which it should be led and issues such as how success is most likely to be achieved so that the foundations of project management may be  applied to any type of project such as IT, retail and construction and necessary differences that may apply to specific industries may be identified. 1.1 Aims and Objectives The objective  of the paper is to provide a good theoretical framework that can be used as the foundation for practical aspects in the development of a viable project plan. In  order to consider relevant the project will aim to answer the following questions. * What is project managment * What is the role of the project manager? * Are there  differences in the skills needed by project managers undertaking different types of project? * What is needed for a project to be successful? * What occurs at different stages of  a project 1.2 Research Question To undertake this paper the main questions is what models, concepts and general issues will benefit a potential project manager before embarking on a project planning  exercise and then look at how these can be used in the preparation of a project plan. 2.
