point of being an autonomous individual is to believe that one has a purpose in life and that your talents and ideas are being used wisely toward that purpose. This
must be the basis of creating a universal worker position. It must involve mentorship, leadership, and ongoing learning. It must also allow system level dialogue in areas unrelated to the
daily work of the universal worker. This is one way the position overcome the hurdles that have gotten in the way of its success in the past. The other ways
are by changing the way the entire organization things. The thinking must be decompartmentalized and changed into system level thinking, not one of belonging to a system, but to one
of participating in creating and assisting with the operation of the entire organization. Steps and Structures Throwing out the Old
The main reason this type of position has not worked in the past is that company leaders are embroiled in the "quick fix" (van Maurik
2001:201). This creates an environment based in the old system of competition and secrecy, rather than one that is open to a system level orientation. This system perpetuates itself, so
the universal worker feels excluded and can find no real attachment to the processes. This position will only work if all employees understand the need to communicate, starting from top
leadership down. Creating Agents Senge called people "agents" with all the ability necessary to act within systems, but they have been molded
