Project director Nikki Lee RN, BSN, RN at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, Ohio, proposes a study investigating the efficacy of Therapeutic Touch (TT) in the management of
chronic pain among individuals over the age of 65. Section A: Problem Identification Pain is the most common reason that individuals seek medical
care, and typically the single group that experiences the most frequent rates of chronic pain is the elderly. Drug use increasingly is frowned on as a first measure, and
often fears of overuse of drugs prevents patients from receiving relief they were not able to gain without pain treatment of any kind. Cost is another issue, particularly as
the cost of prescription drugs continues to rise past the point that many on fixed incomes can pay. The proposed solution is to implement a TT program at the
local hospital to assess TTs ability to provide pain relief. Section B: Innovation Description TT is a four-step process that seeks to balance
the individuals own energy flows. The most recent article on TT listed at PubMed is that authored by Gronowicz, Jhaveri, Clarke, Aronow and Smith (2008), who report that TT
treatment over plates of types of cells resulted in greater proliferation of those cells than in control groups. TT requires training only.
It requires no equipment or specific setting and in fact can be administered in any space that is quiet and free of distractions for several minutes at a time. Section
C: Research Support Early research was poorly designed and poorly executed but gained the attention of medical journals. In recent years a
