long in coming. One such issue is gun control. The United States is one of the only countries in the first world to allow its citizenry to privately purchase and
keep firearms, including handguns, assault rifles, and other non-hunting weaponry, and also one of the countries most plagued by gun violence. Although this correlation would seem to suggest that there
would be an easy consensus on the matter that guns need to be regulated in society the same as in most other modern democracies, this is far from the case
in the United States. In the US, the right to bear arms is considered by many to be one of the key freedoms which separates the United States from others
and point to the Second Amendment of the Constitution as proof of the inalienability of this right. For such proponents of gun ownership, suggesting stronger policies on gun control is
tantamount to taking away a deeply cherished freedom. On the other hand, however, the United States has been recently plagued with a rash of gun violence; within just the last
few years, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot by a politically-motivated assassin armed with a gun, a theater in Aurora, Colorado erupted into chaos when a gunman opened fire on moviegoers,
a student opened fire on his peers at Virginia Tech, killing and wounding many, a soldier opened fire on his compatriots at a military base in Fort Hood, and many,
many other incidents. As a result, calls for gun control are being renewed across the country, and many are eager to see some kind of change that would bring American
