of the war; however, the second bomb that fell upon Nagasaki symbolized the ongoing strength and power that the United States was determined to uphold. The devastation that took  place on account of this particular war was insurmountable, which left it up to the mightiest of all forces to put an end to its continuation. In addition, it  was also important that America clearly demonstrate the fact that it was not going to tolerate anything like this battle again, finding itself compelled to drill this fact home to  the Japanese. "If it can be shown that using the bomb shortened the war, averting the need for a land invasion and the loss of many thousands of lives  on both sides, the moral issue is settled" (Loebs 11). From the revisionist point of view, there is no way to condone the  dropping of Nagasakis bomb (Anonymous PG); however, others claim that this group is remiss in their understanding of just how imperative it was that the Japanese know that America meant  business. Even though the Japanese were given sufficient time and chances to retreat, America still had a moral obligation to employ alternative means. No matter that they considered  the threat of an atomic bomb attack as idle, that was no justification for the United States to engulf an entire society in what can be argued were the actions  of but a few. "The dramatic dropping of atomic bombs on August 6 and 9 on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively, came as a complete surprise to the American public  and to the Army strategic planners, with the exception of a handful of top officers in the Washington command post who were in on the secret" (Matlof PG).
