with all the untidy complexities of life. Sometimes, however, the very act of making a particular activity illegal can create more problems than it solves. It is our  government, after all, which determines not only our actions but also our reactions. There are a number of examples where this contention can be demonstrated. Euthanasia, gambling, homosexuality,  pornography, and prostitution all jump to mind. One of the most enlightening examples of this contention, however, is prostitution. The rightful role  of society in terms of creating laws is discussed to some length by Plato himself. In The Republic he gives us the basis of the existence of our modern-day  government and the role of that government in ensuring justice. Through his extensive discussion of the concepts of ethics and morality, however, we are able to ascertain that government  is a man-made structure which imposes the wishes of the majority, or at least the most powerful, on the whole. Under this philosophical framework, therefore, government might not actually  ensure justice but only the desires and wishes of the most powerful segment of our society. This contention is particularly evident in exploring the issues of prostitution.  While we like to console ourselves with the belief that right and wrong are clearly distinguishable, the reality of the situation is that in some  cases it is simply impossible to clearly define right and wrong. While prostitution is illegal in most areas of the United States, there are those that effectively argue that  making it illegal has resulted in more problems than successes. To understand this contention it is necessary to seek an understanding of the full societal significance of female prostitution.
